Penguins have a special gland behind their eyes that filters out salt from seawater, which they often ingest while swimming or eating. Additionally, their eyes are adapted to see clearly both underwater and on land, and their corneas help reduce the glare from the sun on snowy landscapes – like built-in shades!
Original Voices:
Emperor penguins can identify their mate or chick among thousands in a noisy colony by their unique vocal calls. Their “language” is so distinct that scientists study it to understand how vocal recognition works in noisy environments.
Toboggan Experts:
When they’re not waddling or swimming, penguins like to toboggan! They lie on their bellies and use their flippers and feet to slide across ice and snow, which is both an efficient way to travel and a whole lot of fun to watch.
