Unlike opaque mediums, watercolor relies on the white of the paper to create lighter areas, including highlights. Balancing shadows and highlights requires understanding the transparency and fluidity of watercolor pigments. Despite its challenges, mastering highlights and shadows in watercolor painting can result in breathtakingly beautiful and luminous artworks.
