When did Watercolor first come on the scene?
The earliest watercolor was found in ancient Egypt around 8,000 years ago. People used it to decorate tombs. The watercolor didn’t fade because it was mixed with natural substances like gum arabic, which helped it stick. Nowadays we don’t generally watercolor on stone walls, artists use watercolor paper, which is thick and textured, allowing water to stay on the surface. It’s often acid-free to prevent yellowing over time.
Watercolor supplies, are they all equal?
For watercolor painting, it’s best to use soft brushes made of natural hair or synthetic fibers. Round brushes are versatile. There are different types of watercolor paints, including student-grade and artist-grade. Artist-grade paints are usually more expensive due to higher pigment concentration and quality. Similarly, brushes vary in quality and price. Investing in higher quality watercolor equipment can yield better results and convenience for the artist, as they often offer better pigmentation, color mixing, and durability.
